You can participate in helping develop a bank account for the future for students. All comers are welcome, whether student, lecturer or member of the public.

Our first meeting is on 27th July at 3pm - 4pm in the C309, Cottesbrooke, Northampton University Park Campus, Boughton Green Road, Northampton, NN2 7AL

Cherwell Community Bank Launches

Around 20 Cherwell residents, including a number of district councillors, grabbed the chance to sign up to an alternative to the high street banks during a launch event in Banbury.

The Cherwell Community Bank (CCB) has been developed to offer residents an alternative way to manage their money, with the introduction of the Universal Credit system prompting Cherwell District Council (CDC) and Sanctuary Housing to help establish the not-for-profit financial services provider in the district.
After signing up for her own account and launching the service on Saturday at the Castle Quay Shopping Centre in Banbury, Councillor Debbie Pickford, CDC’s portfolio holder for housing, thanked partners and officers and said: “Cherwell Community Bank is a very safe way to save, borrow and budget.
“I truly believe this is a great asset to our residents and would encourage you to sign up. I've filled in my application form and I'm delighted to be one of the first account holders.”

The CCB is an expansion of the Northamptonshire Credit Union (NCU), which was started in 1997 by Northampton Borough Council’s payroll department to help council workers.

NCU Opens in South Northants

Around 20 South Northamptonshire residents including a district councillor grabbed the chance to sign up to an alternative to the high street banks during a launch event in Towcester.

The Northamptonshire Credit Union (NCU) has existed in the county since 1997, but the forthcoming introduction of the new Universal Credit system prompted South Northants Council (SNC) and South Northants Homes (SNH) to help expand the not-for-profit financial services provider into the district.

After signing up for his own account and launching the service at Towester Recreation Ground Councillor Ian McCord, SNC’s portfolio holder for resources thanked partners and officers for enabling the expansion and said: “This new facility will prove to be a great asset for our local community that I am proud to be supporting it personally and on behalf of the council.

“NCU is a community owned provider of safe savings, affordable loans and simple banking services.

“The Credit Union does not have any private shareholders and is therefore run solely in the interests of you – the customers.

“It exists to help you take control of your money, by offering a safe and secure way to save, to budget and to borrow.

“Through these things, the Credit Union allows you to build financial resilience, helping to smooth out those ‘bumps in the road’ that hit us from time to time.”

A face painter was on hand to keep children busy while their parents learned about the scheme and signed up.

The national Illegal Money Lending Team also sent along Sid the Loan Shark to illustrate the fact that the NCU will also provide an alternative to less scrupulous money lender.
